The alpine site is located on the Cardrona valley floor, with the Cardrona mountain range to the west and the Pisa mountain range to the east.
The project provides approximately 25,000sm of amenities and accommodation types - from high end hotel rooms to more affordable hostel rooms.
The response to the project was to create a resonance with the scale of the landscape and the sky. The design aspired to create a sense of timelessness, a sense of place and a place for people.
The materiality of the architecture was critical to informing a response to the setting with the vocabulary reflecting the gravitas and scale of the site.
The materials are complimentary to the traditional palette of materials found in the region.
Gabion walls - reminiscent of traditional drystone walls, blackened and charred timber, and metals were employed through the project with a sense of solidity and mass.
